Welcome to Newcomer Education Consultation Services!
My name is Derick Vickroy, I have successfully led a High School Newcomer Program in Ohio’s largest urban school district for eight years with 22 years as an educator. Though our program has reshaped over the years, our focus has never changed; building opportunities for ELLs to thrive in a specialized learning environment. It is designed to develop English language skills while working through content learning standards. Much of our program success has come from our systematic whole child approach, as we take our responsibility to welcome new families into the United States education system very seriously.
Newcomer Education Consultation Services exists to empower school districts, building administrators, and educators to create inclusive, culturally responsive, and academically rigorous learning environments for Newcomer and all English Language Learner (ELL) students. We provide expert guidance, strategic program development, and practical classroom solutions to ensure every multilingual learner has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Evaluation of Current Programming
We will complete a thorough needs assessment of your district, school, and classroom practices and make recommendations accordingly. Data analysis includes student performance and an examination of social-emotional needs.
Professional Development and Coaching
We work hands-on with district administrators, school administrators, and classroom teachers to provide direct support. Depending on the programmatic needs that have been identified, this service could look quite different in one school district or school to the next.
Family and Community Engagement
English Language Learners can thrive when we are purposeful about how we engage their families. Additionally, with the cultural diversity most districts have, strategic community partners can be a tremendous help. Families must secure their basic needs as they arrive in our country. What community partners do you have that stand in the gap to meet these needs? We will work with your staff to review current practices and explore how we can solidify this critical need.
Analysis of Resources
Resources for this specific student population are usually overwhelming or incredibly vague, with little variation in between. Finding the right resources to meet your students' and families' needs is critical. The ability to push through language barriers is crucially important. What translation services are you currently using? I would be happy to share some of the resources that have helped my students and families thrive.
